Why prices vary

Region, what is included, and practice ownership can all move the figure.

The same vaccination can carry very different published prices.

Where you live, which practice you choose and what the published price includes can all affect the figure you are quoted.

01

Region: a primary course costs up to £37 more in some parts of the UK.

Regional medians use practices in each region that publish a matching price online. Regions with fewer than 10 publishing practices are excluded.

02

What is included matters as much as the headline figure.

Some practices include a full health check as part of the vaccination visit. Others include microchip registration, or a flea and worm treatment at the same appointment. Others charge separately for each of these.

A higher published vaccination price is not automatically worse value if it covers more. Before comparing, ask what each quote includes. The questions in Section 05 below are a practical starting point.

03

Part of a larger group vs independent: the price difference is around 16%.

The median published primary vaccination course price is £100 at practices that are part of a larger group, and £86 at independent practices. That difference reflects many factors: region, facilities, staffing and what is included. Ownership type alone does not explain everything.

Pet care plans

Many practices bundle vaccinations into a monthly preventive care plan.

Worth asking your practice about.

A monthly health plan (sometimes called a wellness or preventive care plan) typically bundles the primary course or annual booster alongside routine treatments such as flea and worm prevention. The CMA assigned this a service ID of its own (CMA 12), and Rightvet tracks published plan prices alongside individual vaccination prices.

Whether a plan saves money depends on what is bundled and how many of those services you would otherwise pay for separately. This is not an endorsement. It is worth asking your practice whether they offer one, and comparing the total cost. Compare plan prices on the Rightvet price checker.

Before you book

A published price may cover different things at different practices.

Ask these questions before you book.

A vaccination price can mean different things at different practices. These questions help you compare like with like.

  • 01

Does the price cover all three injections in the primary course, or only one?

  • 02

Does it include the health check at the vaccination visit?

  • 03

What vaccinations does my dog actually need? (Rightvet is not the authority on this. Ask your vet, or refer to RCVS guidance.)

  • 04

Is kennel cough included, or is it a separate charge?

  • 05

Could the price change for my dog's breed, age or clinical history?

Questions

What other owners ask before they book a vaccination appointment.

Questions about dog vaccination costs.

How much does a puppy vaccination course cost?

The median published price for a puppy primary vaccination course is £99 across UK first-opinion practices that publish a matching price online. The typical range is £55 to £145. Your actual quote will vary by practice and region.

Do I need to vaccinate every year?

Most vets recommend annual or triennial boosters depending on the specific vaccine. Core vaccines (distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus) may follow a three-year cycle; leptospirosis and kennel cough are typically annual. Your vet is the right authority for advice specific to your dog.

What does the vaccination price include?

It varies. Some practices include a health check as part of the vaccination visit; others charge separately. Some include microchip registration or parasite treatment in the same appointment. Ask before you book whether the published price covers all three injections in the primary course, or only one.

Why does my vet charge more than the figures here?

The figures on this page are national medians: half of practices that publish a price charge less, half charge more. Higher prices may reflect your region, the practice's facilities, what is included in the appointment, or simply local pricing decisions. A higher price does not automatically mean worse value if it includes more.

Is a pet care plan cheaper for vaccinations?

Many practices offer monthly health plans (sometimes called wellness plans) that bundle vaccinations, booster reminders and routine preventive treatments into a fixed monthly fee. Whether a plan works out cheaper depends on what is included and how many services you use. Visit our /prices page to see published plan prices alongside individual vaccine prices.
